Montreal, February 25, 2020 – ACADEMIES ESPORTS CANADA (AEC) is proud to announce the launch of a pilot project in collaboration with Desjardins Group.
The goal of the “Reconnect!” project is to demonstrate that the supervised practice of Esports is a vital tool to prevent school dropout, in the same way, that football or drama class can have positive repercussions in schools. Also, it aims to offer possible solutions to prevent cyber addiction and the many issues related to digital technology consumption among young people.
The project consists of using young people’s passion for video games as a motivational tool to get them more interested in school and teach them healthy lifestyle habits. The three-year pilot project will begin with about 20 students in Quebec and Ontario. It will be possible for us to have a positive impact on young people through extracurricular activities, conferences and our daily presence in the field. It is also in line with the vision that a healthy mind in a healthy body is conducive to the development and balance of young Quebecers.
Respect for the values shared by Desjardins Group and the AEC, which include educational success, the promotion of healthy lifestyle habits and cooperation, makes this collaboration a natural symbiosis.
Desjardins Group’s contribution to the project translates into $300,000 in financial assistance from the $100 million Desjardins Fund. This Fund enables Desjardins Group to support promising projects for its members and their communities, structuring projects that look to the future and breathe new economic and social dynamism.
According to a report by the Newzoo agency, Esports had approximately 458.8 million viewers in 2019 worldwide, a 15% increase over 2018. It’s important to remember that Esports were present as a demonstration sport at the 2018 Asian Games.
